Since 1989, Down Home Ranch has been more than a ranch. It’s a welcoming home where residents with cognitive disabilities live with purpose, find true belonging, and thrive in a supportive community designed just for them.

A Place to call home

Life feels better Here

Since its founding in 1990, Down Home Ranch has grown from serving just three people to a thriving residential community for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Here, residents build skills, independence, and lasting connections in a safe, supportive rural setting.

Down Home Ranch offers a variety of residential options including group homes, suite-style homes, independent living experiences, and intermediate care facilities. As a provider of the Home and Community-Based Services (HCS) waiver program in Elgin, the Ranch gives residents access to services and supports covered through HCS, which helps fund long-term care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Services include room and board, day programming, transportation, nursing care, case coordination, case management, and vocational support. Amenities include a community center, pool, basketball court, archery range, fishing pond, kayak launch, fire pit, hiking trails, and interaction with Ranch animals.

There are no current openings, but fill out an interest form if you’re interested. Residency applications will be reviewed by staff, and families will be contacted if their applicant appears to be a good match.
While you wait, consider joining our Day Program for opportunities to experience Ranch life!

Be a part of our future

Our 410 acres are home to a community where Ranchers are empowered to thrive side by side. Thanks to the support of donors and volunteers like you, Down Home Ranch can continue providing work, care, and camp for many years to come.

“Y’all do a great job! [My son] begins looking forward to returning as we are pulling out of the DHR gates! He becomes more confident every camp visit!”

Camper Mom

“I taught middle school math way back when. In all the training I had for curriculum planning for Gifted & Talented kids, I learned about the rich sort of environment that motivates students. The things [My Rancher] gets to do every day at DHR are providing her with that very type of rich environment. Her social interactions and even her intellectual abilities have grown so much since she's been at DHR.”

Rancher Mom

“When we had a little goodbye Oreo party for my last day as a social work intern, I was so sad. Driving to the Ranch that first time, I never imagined how much I’d love working with the ranchers. I’ll miss checking in every Friday, joining art classes, and even chasing chickens. But I’ll be back! If you see me at an event or the Pavilion, please say hello, I’d love to hear your story of finding Down Home Ranch.”

DHR Social Work Intern

“He relishes the stars in the rural night sky. The ability to wear boots and a cowboy hat as a daily uniform is delightful. His purpose now is to help wherever he can, whenever he can, because he can. There is a feel at the ranch that is peaceful, loving, inclusive and welcoming. Everyone has a place or a role.”

Down Home Ranch must have an agreement in place with the provider before respite begins. The respite will be billed after the respite stay is completed.

Payment must be received before respite begins. Refunds will only be given if canceled 30 days before the start of respite. A partial refund may be given in the event of an illness that requires the individual to return home.

If an individual has a fever at or above 100.4 degrees and/or has vomiting or diarrhea, it may be requested for the individual to return home.

The individual will need to bring spending cash with them during their respite stay. Typically $20.00 – $50.00 is enough to cover any entry fees and shopping trips. If additional money is needed, a phone call will be made to the responsible party to confirm a dollar amount that can be disbursed to the individual. The responsible party will be billed along with any administrative cost incurred.

Each week there are activities planned for the weekend that can include baseball games, Special Olympic events, shopping trips, etc. If respite occurs over the weekend the individual will select activities that are of interest to him/her.
