Tell a Friend About
Down Home Ranch

Vocational Training, Employment,
and Continuing Education

Down Home Ranch provides rich opportunities for growth in mind, body, and spirit for all residents. Every person benefits from stimulating and dignified employment and the chance to learn and try new things throughout the arc of a long, well-lived life.

Residents choose work in the following areas, with the option to move to a new area every six months:
  • Grounds and Gardens
  • Janitorial
  • Barns & Animal Husbandry
  • Food Service
  • Arts and Crafts
The Village Council

Residents make up the Village Council, which meets on Thursday afternoons. A Mayor is elected by the Council and is assisted as necessary by staff, leading the discussion of concerns most on the residents' minds, from planning weekend activities, to selecting vacation spots, to agreeing upon needed improvements in Ranch infrastructure or programs.

Through participation in Village Council, residents have a genuine voice in the running of their community. The Council has been instrumental in successfully addressing the following matters:
  • Installation of outside lighting in the Village
  • The decision to take a cruise for their coming vacation
  • Repair and improvement of roads and bicycle paths
  • Changes in the work schedule and selection of projects
Any resident may run for a place on the Council. Members are elected for six-month terms by majority vote and elections held to coincide with national or state elections insofar as this is practical. Meetings are held in compliance with Robert's Rules of Order. Positions are:
  • Mayor
  • Vice Mayor
  • Secretary
  • Sergeant at Arms
  • Membership on the Human Rights Committee
  • Delegate to the Activity Committee
