Hanging Baskets on Sale Now
When winter winds blow through Central Texas, Down Home Ranchers are already planning for spring. We plant thousands of hanging baskets and wait for the day when these tiny plants become waterfalls of flowers, filling our greenhouses with color.
Growing these baskets is just one of the ways that our Ranchers support themselves. In addition to the work they do keeping the Ranch running, they create products like hanging baskets, poinsettias and lilies to sell to our friends and neighbors and businesses in the surrounding area. But our Ranchers don't just earn money from their efforts; they learn to do a good job and take pride in their work. They recognize the contribution they make to their community. And they demonstrate to everyone that they are eager and able to help support themselves.
Our organization isn't the only one that benefits. Many of our customers use flower sales as an annual fund-raiser. Purchasing the baskets for a discounted price and selling them for $15 or more is a very profitable way to bring in the spring. Now is the time to set up your Spring Fundraiser. We've already heard from last year's customers, and new orders are coming in every day. Orders are processed in the order they come in, so reserve yours as soon as possible. If you just want to buy just a few plants for your home or office, we are accepting walk-in customers starting in mid-March, Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 3:30 pm or by appointment. New customer or old friend, we look forward to hearing from you.
Learning to Grow
After erecting our first greenhouse in 1993, we began to see the potential for a cash crop that could create jobs and income. After the first greenhouse was damaged in a fire, Joe Matthews, an Abilene businessman, donated five Nexus greenhouses, creating a great opportunity for Down Home Ranch - an opportunity for our Ranchers and our organization to become more self-sufficient. In 1999, we grew 2,000 poinsettias with the help of C.O. Smith, owner of the Hill Country Nursery in Austin. He guided us through every step of the process, and soon we were experts in poinsettia production. We now grow 15,000 poinsettias each year. Since then, we have branched out into numerous other products. From a few hundred baskets four years ago to over 2,000 sold last year, we have been growing steadily. To everyone who purchased our plants in the past, or supported us with your time and labor, thank you. We couldn't do it without you.
